Painting tiles in the bathroom or kitchen, is that really possible?

You might recognize this scenario: you've bought a beautiful house, but the bathroom still dates from the '90s, complete with a busy floral print. Or your kitchen backsplash has a color that no longer matches your current interior. You don't want the dust clouds, costs, or hassle of a major demolition job. Painting tiles then sounds like the perfect, quick solution for a fresh new look.

But is that possible in damp or heavily used areas? The short answer is: yes, it certainly is! The long answer? The end result depends on the right preparation, the choice of your paint, and realistic expectations about its lifespan.

The pros and cons at a glance

Before you get started with the rollers, it's wise to weigh the pros and cons. This way, you won't encounter any surprises later.

  • Advantage: It's a quick way to give a space a completely new look without demolition work.
  • Advantage: You don't need a tiler; with a little patience, it's a great DIY project.
  • X Disadvantage: You lose the depth of the grout. Because you paint over the grout lines, one smooth surface is created. This can sometimes look a bit 'flat' or unnatural.
  • X Disadvantage: Paint is never as hard or durable as fired ceramic. It is more vulnerable to scratches and bumps.
Be careful with wet rooms and floors

Although wall tiles in the kitchen or the 'dry' parts of your bathroom (such as around the toilet or washbasin) are perfectly paintable, we strongly advise against painting floor tiles or tiles in the shower area. Due to constant hot water, soap residue, and wear from walking, paint here peels off very quickly. For these surfaces, real ceramic tiles are simply the only durable option.

The major pitfall: don't forget the sealant!

A common mistake when painting tiles is simply painting over existing silicone sealant (for example, in the corners or along the countertop). Paint does not adhere to silicone sealant. It will immediately bead up and eventually peel off. So make sure you cut away and remove all old sealant before you degrease and paint. Only after the paint has fully cured, apply a new, neat sealant bead.

Step-by-step plan: Painting tiles like a pro

Deciding to get started? Then never skip a step. A smooth ceramic tile is naturally not made to hold paint.

  • 1. Thoroughly degrease and clean: The most important step! Use a powerful degreaser (such as St. Marc or a special paint cleaner) and make the tiles spotlessly clean. Don't forget to scrub the grout lines well, as grease often accumulates there.
  • 2. Lightly sand: Even if your tiles are smooth, the top layer must be 'broken' so that the primer can adhere. Lightly sand the tiles with fine sandpaper (grit 240) or a sanding pad and then wipe off all sanding dust with a damp cloth.
  • 3. Apply special primer: Always use a special tile primer (base coat). Regular wall paint primer does not work on glaze. Allow this base coat to cure according to the instructions on the can.
  • 4. Finish with tile paint: Use a lacquer specifically suitable for the kitchen or bathroom, such as a 2-component polyurethane or epoxy paint. Roll the paint evenly with a paint roller for the smoothest result. Sometimes two coats are needed.

How do you maintain painted tiles?

Is the paintwork neat and fully cured? Then keep in mind that you need to clean the tiles differently than you were used to. Do not use abrasive sponges, hard brushes, or aggressive chemical agents (such as chlorine or scouring powder). A soft microfiber cloth with a mild soapy solution is sufficient. Treat the painted wall essentially the same way you would treat a lacquered wooden cabinet.

Is it worth the cost and time?

Painting tiles is a nice solution, but keep in mind that good primers, degreasers, and 2-component tile paint can actually be quite pricey. Add to that the vulnerability of paint, and the choice for truly new tiles is often made faster than you think.

At Budget Tiles, you'll find high-quality ceramic tiles at prices that will surprise you. Why compromise when you can have a scratch-resistant, durable wall that stays beautiful for decades for almost the same price?
