What exactly does tumbled mean?
The term originally comes from the world of natural stone. Previously (and sometimes still today), perfectly cut natural stone tiles were literally thrown into a large rotating drum, along with pebbles or sand. As the drum turned, the tiles collided with each other, causing the sharp corners and edges to chip off. The result? A tile with soft, irregular edges and a beautiful 'lived-in' and rustic appearance.
While truly tumbled natural stone is beautiful, it comes with significant drawbacks: it is extremely expensive, prone to scratches, and requires a lot of maintenance (think annual sealing).
The modern solution: Ceramic tumbled tiles
Fortunately, you no longer have to compromise today. Thanks to modern printing and firing techniques, we now have ceramic tiles with a tumbled look. These tiles don't actually roll through a drum, but are already formed in the factory to have those authentic, chipped edges and color nuances. Because the edges of tumbled tiles are irregular and playful, the grout is often wider and more visible than with straight (rectified) tiles. Therefore, pay extra attention to your grout color! A contrasting grout emphasizes the nostalgic shape of each individual tile, while a grout color in the exact same shade makes the floor calmer and more cohesive.
